[more]Modified and enlarged version of the Icd-9 (International classification of diseases, IX revision, Geneve, 1975) used for causes of death. The Icd-9-cm was developed to classify morbidity data. It allows a more precise coding of diagnosis, both by using a fifth digit (the Icd-9 has four digits), and by using an ad hoc classification for hospital procedures.
The Italian translation of the classification is periodically updated. For 1995-2005 data the 1997 version was adopted, while for 2006-2008 data the 2002 version was adopted.
